This project began when Vill Mer invited me to join their competition team for the new main exhibition at Voss Folkemuseum. Our proposal, “Window Towards Voss,” was chosen as the winning entry. The exhibition was conceived as an open and welcoming space offering a broad perspective on Voss — past, present, and future.
The concept explores what defines the character of Voss and its people (Vossingen), combining history, landscape, and contemporary life into one continuous narrative. At its heart is a large-scale projection that opens the end wall of the main gallery, creating a striking “window” toward the valley and the world beyond. The design balances robust structure with flexibility, dividing the exhibition into zones along a chronological timeline while allowing for tactile, digital, and sensory encounters that engage both intellect and emotion.
The exhibition opened in the summer of 2021 to very positive reception.
During the competition phase, we collaborated remotely to refine the concept and test ideas through an evolving 3D model. Regular updates to the model allowed the team to make informed design decisions and present a proposal that closely reflected what would later be realised in the museum.
When the project moved into production, I developed two interactive installations and worked with Bright to ensure they performed reliably on the available hardware. One was a large touchscreen-based slideshow, and the other was controlled through physical buttons. Both were built to be easily updated by the museum staff.
In addition to the interactive components, I filmed and composited the looping time-lapse projection that forms the exhibition's “Window towards Voss.” The two clips — each a 20-minute seamless loop — show views of the valley outside the museum, with the idea that new seasonal versions can be added over time.
The combination of physical artefacts, interactive elements, and moving imagery has created an exhibition that feels both rooted and alive. It provides visitors with a holistic experience of Voss’s cultural spirit (Vosseånden), connecting information and emotion through sight, sound, touch, and storytelling. The project demonstrates how digital tools and traditional exhibition design can together create a flexible, future-oriented framework for cultural presentation.
